Is GM's Volt A Big Winner?

No, so far the Volt is a marketing failure. This is a "green" electric car that Barak Obama said would sell like pancakes. In order for it to become a commercial success it has to sell by 2013 a million cars.

Do you know how it is doing so far? Not good. So far in the middle of 2011 Government Motors has only sold 1,700 of these marvelous little green cars that were supposed to have revolutionized how Americans traveled.

GM had to sell a million or more cars to become a commercial success, or to even meet lowest expectations. No, folks. I don't want to sound pessimistic or discouraged, but this car has been another Edsel, a colossal commercial failure. Will this mean Obama will stop pushing onto the American public his choice of cars? No, he will forge ahead undaunted because it's your dime--I should say your $50 Billion--he's spending, not his.

I pity the investors who put hard cash down on GM during the past year or so. As I understand it, the American public doesn't own 60 percent of this company that should have been allowed to fail and declare bankruptcy, it owns only slightly more than 20 percent. Pity all the dummies on Wall Street who paid for this thinking the stock would soar. But if Barak Obama is re-elected, count on him to again bailout GM and Wall Stret--even give management bogus bonuses, too.

Someone in one of the upcoming presidential debates should ask him if he intends to continue bailing out defunct companies like General Electric, General Motors, AIG insurance and others?

If he answers yes, don't vote for him. But, oh, I forgot. It doesn't matter what this man says in the election campaign, he can lie to you in your face now and do just the opposite. How does he get away with it? There is no justification for it except that he's a born liar living the Chicago way.
Born in Hawaii, didn't he say? Or don't you want to remember?

TIPS ON PUMPING GAS

I don't know what you guys are paying for gasoline.... but here in California we are paying up to $3.75 to $4.10 per gallon. My line of work is in petroleum for about 31 years now, so here are some tricks to get more of your money's worth for every gallon:

Here at the Kinder Morgan Pipeline where I work in San Jose, CA we deliver about 4 million gallons in a 24-hour period thru the pipeline.. One day is diesel the next day is jet fuel, and gasoline, regular and premium grades. We have 34-storage tanks here with a total capacity of 16,800,000 gallons.

Only buy or fill up your car or truck in the early morning when the ground temperature is still cold. Remember that all service stations have their storage tanks buried below ground. The colder the ground the more dense the gasoline, when it gets warmer gasoline expands, so buying in the afternoon or in the evening....your gallon is not exactly a gallon. In the petroleum business, the specific gravity and the temperature of the gasoline, diesel and jet fuel, ethanol and other petroleum products plays an important role.

A 1-degree rise in temperature is a big deal for this business. But the service stations do not have temperature compensation at the pumps.

When you're filling up do not squeeze the trigger of the nozzle to a fast mode If you look you will see that the trigger has three (3) stages: low, middle, and high. You should be pumping on low mode, thereby minimizing the vapors that are created while you are pumping. All hoses at the pump have a vapor return. If you are pumping on the fast rate, some of the liquid that goes to your tank becomes vapor. Those vapors are being sucked up and back into the underground storage tank so you're getting less worth for your money.

One of the most important tips is to fill up when your gas tank is HALF FULL. The reason for this is the more gas you have in your tank the less air occupying its empty space. Gasoline evaporates faster than you can imagine. Gasoline storage tanks have an internal floating roof. This roof serves as zero clearance between the gas and the atmosphere, so it minimizes the evaporation. Unlike service stations, here where I work, every truck that we load is temperature compensated so that every gallon is actually the exact amount.

Another reminder, if there is a gasoline truck pumping into the storage tanks when you stop to buy gas, DO NOT fill up; most likely the gasoline is being stirred up as the gas is being delivered, and you might pick up some of the dirt that normally settles on the bottom.

To have an impact, we need to reach literally millions of gas buyers. It's really simple to do.

fuel-efficient choices than ever before

MORE THAN 160 CHOICES

The good news for consumers is that competition among automakers is driving a range of fuel-efficient technologies to market. In the federal government's 2011 Fuel Economy Guide, (www.fueleconomy.gov) more than 160 models are listed that achieve high mileage, in excess of 30 MPG.

However, consumer demand has not kept pace with the industry's advancements, and automakers are encouraging consumers to consider buying one of the many fuel-efficient models on sale now. To meet our country’s goals for energy security, we need to get high volumes of these high MPG vehicles on the road.

4% CHOOSE HIGH MPG CARS

Only 4% of consumers bought cars which had 30+ MPG Combined Milage

While the majority of consumers cite fuel economy as an important consideration, only 4 percent of car buyers bought cars achieving 30 MPG or better in MY 2010, according to Ward’s Automotive. Out of 13 million passenger vehicles solid in 2010, only about 500,000 were high MPG vehicles.

94% WORRY ABOUT PRICE

Pocketbook concerns drive vehicle buying decisions, and 94 percent of consumers have said high purchase price was a deterrent to choosing an environmentally friendly or green vehicle. According to a 2010 National Academies of Science report, “new technologies can result in significant fuel savings for passenger vehicles, but at higher purchase prices for consumers.”

THE ROAD TO ENERGY SECURITY

Diverse auto technologies are on sale today, with more coming. But our country doesn’t enhance energy security if high MPG vehicles sit on dealer lots. Our policy priority now is clear, and we urge government to help find ways to encourage sales of more fuel-efficient technologies.

Energy providers play a big role in providing lower-carbon fuels and energy infrastructure. Government can assist with consistent, long-term policies and investments in infrastructure. We all need to join together to support an integrated approach to energy security.

The Washington Post babbled again today about Obama inheriting a huge deficit from Bush. Amazingly enough,...... A lot of people swallow this nonsense. So once more, a short civics lesson.
Budgets do not come from the White House. They come from Congress, and the party that controlled Congress since January 2007 is the Democratic Party. They controlled the budget process for Fiscal Year 2008 and FY 2009, as well as FY 2010 and FY 2011. In that first year, they had to contend with George Bush, which caused them to compromise on spending, when Bush somewhat belatedly got tough on spending increases.
For FY 2009 though, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reidbypassed George Bush entirely, passing continuing resolutions to keep government running until Barack Obama could take office. At that time, they passed a massive omnibus spending bill to complete the FY 2009 budgets.
And where was Barack Obama during this time? He was a member of that very Congress that passed all of these massive spending bills, and he signed the omnibus bill as President to complete FY 2009. Let's remember what the deficits looked like during that period: (below)
If the Democrats inherited any deficit, it was the FY 2007 deficit, the last of the Republican budgets. That deficit was the lowest in five years, and the fourth straight decline indeficit spending. After that, Democrats in Congress took control of spending, and that includes Barack Obama, who voted for the budgets. If Obama inherited anything, he inherited it from himself.
In a nutshell, what Obama is saying is I inherited a deficit that I voted for and then I voted to expand that deficit four-fold since January 20th.
There is no way this will be widely publicized,
Unless each of us sends it on!

Do Electric Cars Really Have A Chance?

In 2007, I wrote an article about incompetence in Washington, and Detroit's inability to deliver a truly fuel-efficient vehicle that could compete with theToyota Prius.

Today, the incompetence in Washington hasn't changed at all. In fact, I would argue that it has gotten worse. But Detroit, on the other hand, has actually made some strides over the past few years.

In that 2007 article, I wrote. . .

I know it's not New Year's yet. But my wish for the New Year is that Detroit finally gets its act together and delivers a real fuel-efficient vehicle for us to drive.

As you know, the new Chevy Volt will soon be in showrooms. And I'm pretty excited to see how this one pans out.

Yes, the price tag is hefty – as are the price tags of all new technologies. You think that 91% of the U.S. population would be using cell phones today if they still cost what they did back in the 1980s?

Not a chance.

Over time, and as we start to see economies of scale kick in, the costs of electric and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles from GM - and every other major auto maker - will fall.

There's no doubt about that.

In fact, the entire electric vehicle industry has grown dramatically since we first started covering this market nearly a decade ago. And much of this can be attributed to some serious cost reductions in manufacturing.

Now the Chevy Volt is definitely getting the lion's share of publicity these days, but the entire industry is developing rapidly. And as investors, we need to stay on top of every new development – from new deals with major OEMs to electric car enthusiasts who continue to up the ante when it comes to pushing this technology forward.

Trucks, buses and drag-racing Datsuns. . .

Heavy truck manufacturer Navistar (NYSE: NAV), announced last week that it has seen an uptick in interest in its all-electric truck, the eStar. This is the truck that's now in FedEx (NYSE: FDX) and Pacific Gas & Electric (NYSE: PCG) fleets.

The vehicle is a Class 2c-3 truck boasting an all-electric range of 100 miles and the ability to carry payloads of up to 2 tons. Perfect for urban applications where many of these vehicles don't even get close to racking up 100 miles in a single day.

The vehicle also includes a quick-change battery that can be swapped out in 20 minutes.

Navistar plans to have a total of 400 built this year.

Ener1 (NASDAQ: HEV) also made news last week after the company announced it had landed a deal to provide its lithium-ion batteries to Hyundai Heavy Industries, which will be using the battery packs for electric buses.

Those buses are expected to be on the road this year.

Incidentally, while Ener1 isn't basking in the glory of profitability, it should be noted that the company's latest earnings show that sales surged 113% in the second quarter 2010 compared to the same quarter a year ago.

And finally, for those who question the ability of an electric car to “keep up” with conventional internal combustion vehicles on the nation's highways, take a look at this video of a converted 1972 Datsun.

Equipped with a set of lithium polymer batteries, this little white Datsun ran a ¼ mile drag race in 10.4 seconds at a top speed of 117.21 mph.

Don't expect the new Chevy Volt to do that.

But do expect it to be a major game-changer that's sure to help usher in a new chapter in personal transportation.

The statistics shows that 22-25 million people have already taken cocaine at least one time. Different interrogation data tell that there are more than two million cocaine-takers in America nowadays.
In comparison with old estimation a large amount of cocaine taken is subjected to detection from 10 to 22 days after the use.
Cocaine is the reason of over the half of visits for emergency rooms where drug taking is concerned.
Every year the number of cocaine addicts has been gradually growing for the recent time. For 1975 this number was 30,000. In 1986 it has grown to 300,000 and to 361,000 in 2000.

Men take cocaine twice as much as women take it. Special informal agencies for the office of National Drug Control Policy tell that the amount of constant cocaine addicts is over 3,6 million people.

You can read about the pressure each nation is putting on the other. America's Barak Obama's desire to keep on spending were overridden by Canada's Stephen Harper who got backing from Germany and Britain, and the rest of the world, thank goodness, to have every nation stop spending and start reducing their deficits.

The target date that Obama blatantly announced was cutting the deficit in half by 2013.

Nothing like putting the pressure on taxpayers of a beleagured nation still feeling the effects of an 18-month recession that Obama made worse by his spending. But he wants popularity more than anything. Especially approval of the member states and their leaders, those in G-20. So he will come back and put a massive tax on Americans - possibly the Value Added Tax (VAT) and will suffocate business and increase joblessness in America so we'll really need a bailout from China, a country with plenty of cash.

Here is the NY Times story. G-20 is suggesting an international bank tax. So now we have G-20 ruling the world, just what Obama wanted, folks. What happened to the U.S. Constitution in all of this? Taxation without representation is illegal. It's what caused the war between the Colonies and Great Britain. The people will revolt when the above tax is levied - at least Americans will. This is too much at a time when we should be repealing authorization for the progressive's income tax and the Federal Reserve System which was the motivation for the income tax. After all, how can you give the Fed money to stabalize banks if you don't have a method of collecting money from citizens? Both of these should go. We should cut our deficit in half as soon as possible, but with a new administration. The progressives - Democrats and Republicans - must GO back home and do something else with their time. They've miserably failed, let's face it.

TORONTO — Leaders of the world’s biggest economies agreed Sunday on a timetable for cutting deficits and halting the growth of their debt, but also acknowledged the need to move carefully so that reductions in spending did not set back the fragile global recovery.

The action at the Group of 20 summit meeting here signaled the determination of many of the wealthiest countries, after enacting spending programs to counter the worldwide financial crisis, to now emphasize debt reduction. And it underscored the conviction of European nations in particular that deficits represented the biggest threat to their economic stability.

President Obama and Treasury Secretary Timothy F. Geithner had consistently advocated a measured approach to debt reduction that would not stymie growth and lead to a double-dip recession.

The United States, however, joined other countries at the summit meeting, which was met by protests and several hundred arrests, by endorsing a goal of cutting government deficits in half by 2013 and stabilizing the ratio of public debt to gross domestic product by 2016. Canada’s prime minister, Stephen Harper, had proposed the targets, backed by Germany and Britain.

To assuage objections from the United States, Japan, India and some other countries, the timetable was couched as an expectation, rather than a firm deadline. The G-20 joint statement explicitly stated that Japan, which is heavily dependent on domestic borrowing, was not expected to meet the targets.

The divisions were in contrast to the unity that characterized the previous three G-20 leaders’ summits, when the urgency of a potential global collapse produced solidarity and a unified economic approach. Although Mr. Obama insisted emphatically that there was “violent agreement” on the need to reduce debt over time, the final communiqué included a delicately worded call for deficit reduction “tailored to national circumstances.” In essence, the leaders were blessing their decision to go their own ways.

The joint statement acknowledged both sides of the debate. “There is a risk that synchronized fiscal adjustment across several major economies could adversely impact the recovery,” the statement said. “There is also a risk that the failure to implement consolidation where necessary would undermine confidence and hamper growth.”

In a news conference at the conclusion of the summit meeting, Mr. Obama referred only indirectly to the disagreement with Europe, saying, “We must recognize that our fiscal health tomorrow will rest in no small measure on our ability to create jobs today.”

His concern about stimulus was echoed by some economists who viewed the pledge on deficits as imperiling the prospects for growth.

“China’s growth, specifically, is not seen as sustainable at current rates,” Ronald A. Kurtz, professor of global economics and management at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, said in an e-mail message. “The G-20 declaration therefore amounts to saying ‘assume a miracle’ for global growth.” He said Europe’s fiscal austerity plans would also slow growth.

But Dominique Strauss-Kahn, head of the International Monetary Fund, said he thought the risks of a new downturn were minimal.

“We don’t forecast any double dip,” he said. “Double dip was not discussed at the meeting.”

It is the first time the G-20 has set dates for deficit reduction, but the timetable, which is not binding, will probably not require new policy actions. Most of the governments, including the United States, have already put forward budget proposals in line with the targets.

The leaders also discussed banking regulations, but could not agree on a proposal for a global bank tax, supported by the United States, Britain and the European Union, but opposed by Canada and Australia.

And while the G-20 reaffirmed a deadline — their next meeting, in November in Seoul, South Korea — for agreeing on new capital standards for banks, they signaled that several countries might not implement the standards by 2012, as initially planned.

“While the illusion of progress is good, I don’t see real action to alter the imbalances that brought us to this crisis,” said Raghuram G. Rajan, a former chief economist at the International Monetary Fund who is now a professor in the Booth School of Business at the University of Chicago.

The United States, he said, continues to run large trade deficits financed by Germany, China and Japan. “The U.S. has been the world’s consumer of first resort,” he added, “and because it has been unable to persuade other countries to spend more or to reform quickly, it is likely to take up that position once again.”

Though Mr. Obama did not prevail in his emphasis on stimulus, he did arrive in Canada with three victories under his belt.

European leaders had agreed to conduct stress tests on their big banks, an exercise successfully undertaken in the United States last year, in an effort to restore market confidence. China had announced that it would allow a gradual appreciation of its currency. And Congressional negotiators had agreed on a far-reaching overhaul offinancial regulations.

But those accomplishments did not alter the mix of lagging growth, heavy debts and anxious voters that pushed European leaders to press for austerity.

“The U.S. may be concentrated on premature fiscal tightening, but most other countries are looking with a nervous eye to the sovereign debt mess in Europe,” said Kenneth S. Rogoff, a Harvard economist and former I.M.F. chief economist. “Aiming for a gradually improving debt-to-G.D.P. ratio by 2016 is hardly wild-eyed fiscal conservatism.”

In that light, the G-20 outcome was a victory for Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany, who argued that without actions to rein in spending, investors would drive up governments’ borrowing costs, as they did in Greece.

Mr. Obama said, “We helped to draft this communiqué, which reflects our policies,” and added, “Keep in mind that we had already proposed a long time ago that we were going to cut our deficits in half by 2013.”

He continued, “We can’t all rush to the exits at the same time.” But he also said that for all the talk of German austerity, it was actually reducing its spending gradually, and not any more quickly than the United States.

While aides to Mr. Obama said that the G-20 statement was in line with budget plans he had already announced, others said it was a move toward austerity.

“The best thing that countries with fiscal challenges can do is to show that they can live within their means,” George Osborne, Britain’s chancellor of the Exchequer, said. “Barack Obama has recognized that.”

The mood here was far less anxious than in November 2008, when the G-20 leaders converged for the first time, in Washington, to battle a still-raging financial crisis. But it was hardly cheery.

While China did not make any new commitments, the G-20 statement appealed to China to increase spending on infrastructure, let its currency fluctuate and strengthen social protections.

Those actions are part of what economists call rebalancing — a reorientation of the world economy to be less reliant on debt-financed spending by North American and Western European consumers. China is the largest growth engine but its workers save too much and spend too little, some economists say.

At China’s urging, the G-20 leaders removed from their joint statement a proposed clause that would have praised China for agreeing to greater exchange-rate flexibility. Mr. Harper said he understood China’s wish not to be singled out, for either criticism or praise, but added, “When you make commitments on the world stage, you will be held accountable for them.”

G.M. Reports $4.3 Billion Loss in Second Half of 2009 After Bankruptcy

General Motors said Wednesday that it lost $4.3 billion in
the six months after emerging from bankruptcy protection but
that it had positive cash flow of $1 billion in that period.

In its first earnings report since the bankruptcy, the
automaker said it had $22.8 billion in cash reserves as of
Dec. 31.

The new company said $3.9 billion of the $4.3 billion it lost
between July 10 and Dec. 31 was attributable to a settlement
with the United Automobile Workers union over retiree health
care liabilities and to a "foreign currency re-measurement
loss."

Who Said Cars Can’t Run On Water?

The experts who test-drive the one hundred BMW or Honda hydrogen cars on highways throughout the world today are quick to say it will be another twenty years for the completely non-polluting hydrogen vehicle to arrive.
But if you’re lucky enough to drive one of those futuristic cars that will currently run on liquid hydrogen, as is the case with BMW models, you also will be thinking of the day you can just pour in some H2O and the system will turn water into hydrogen, leaving only water as a byproduct – with zero pollution.
The day of strictly green cars is coming, believe me. But that day is being slowed by oil and gas moguls who don’t want to see their fossil fuel industry implode. What influence these large oil producers like Shell, Mobile, American Oil, British Petroleum and others exert on progress is the untold story. Somewhere in dark, private offices, negotiations are surely going on to delay the coming of this marvelous advance as far into the future as possible.
It took seventy-five years to get telephones in every home across the U.S. But it only took five years for the Internet to flood the world. Judging by that, once it hits, watch out! People won’t want anything else. If you still own a gas-guzzler, better park it in the back of your garage and roll it out once or twice a year to shine it up or to drive in an historical parade. You won’t want to waste the money on gas-pump fuel, if, indeed, any gas stations are still around.
Before the hydrogen car can become a reality, big business must stop dragging their feet. Wall Street magnates wouldn’t call them bribes, because that’s what they are. Money or investment is being dropped into auto manufacturers like BMW, GM, Ford, Toyota, and Honda to dissuade them from doing too much too soon.
But governments are picking up the slack to speed things along. President Obama recently “gave” Al Gore $500 million to help push along his proposed $80,000 car that will be built in Finland in Detroit.
President Bush appropriated some $2 billion in hydrogen highway research. Before the big recession hit, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger was pushing to get 200 hydrogen filling stations built by 2010 stretching from Vancouver, British Columbia, all the way down to Baja, California. Since Californians buy one-fifth of the nation's cars, the new hydrogen car technology could simply replace the current gasoline engine.
When you drive one of these prototypes you don’t really feel any different than driving an all gas-driven vehicle, according to those who have driven them including Jay Leno.
The motor, drive train, air conditioning, wheel system, and other things about the car are the same. But in twenty years, when we’re converting water into hydrogen fuel, we will notice the difference:

· There won’t be any appreciable pollution, just water sprayed out the back end of the car.

· Car efficiency will probably be ten times as great as it is today, costing you, the public, much less or close to nothing to operate this car. Of course, this is the utopia we all dream about, but that kind of result may not be here even in twenty years. After it does arrive, it will take a lot more time to perfect the systems.

But Hydrogen cars are not only in the future, they are here. When hydrogen cars become the status quo, the U. S. can lessen its dependence upon foreign oil, achieve lower prices at the fuel pumps and cut down on the greenhouse gases that allegedly produce global warming. The future of hydrogen cars is not a pipe dream, as there are already many hydrogen cars on the road. California and Japan have many hydrogen cars being used as fleet vehicles now.

Honda FCX Hydrogen Car

In 2005, Honda leased the first commercial hydrogen car to a family in Redondo Beach, California, pictured above.
For the past 28 years, the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) has been conducting research on hydrogen fuel cells for use in transportation, industry and residential use. According to the LANL, "Hydrogen & Fuel Cell Research at Los Alamos has made significant technological advances in Polymer Electrolyte Membrane (PEM) fuel cells, Direct Methanol Fuel Cells (DMFC), and related technologies such as the electrolyzer (a fuel cell in reverse, liberating hydrogen from electricity and pure water)."
Unlike many of the hybrid and "green" cars currently on the market, hydrogen cars offer the promise of zero emission technology, where the only byproduct from the cars is water vapor. Current fossil-fuel burning vehicles emit all sorts of pollutants such as carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, nitrous oxide, ozone and microscopic particulate matter. Hybrids and other green cars address these issues to a large extent but only hydrogen cars hold the promise of zero emission of pollutants. The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that fossil-fuel automobiles emit one-point-five billion tons of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere each year and going to hydrogen-based transportation would all but eliminate this.
Not only that, hydrogen cars will lessen the United States' dependence upon foreign oil. The so-called "hydrogen highway" will mean less dependence upon OPEC, the big U. S. oil companies, oil refinery malfunctions and breakdowns and less resistance from oil-selling nations like Venezuela and Saudi Arabia or from hostile nations who would rather sell elsewhere. Consumers will finally get a break from the never-ending rising prices at the gasoline pumps.
The BMW prototype car has gas and/or hydrogen running capability. Dual-fuel automotive systems are being tested that can run on either gasoline or hydrogen as the hydrogen infrastructure is being developed. The conversion from gasoline-powered internal combustion engines to hydrogen powered combustion engines is agreed upon by most scientists and engineers to be a particularly easy transition and would buy time for hydrogen fuel cell cars to be fully adapted.
But, hydrogen cars are not isolated to those that burn the fuel in internal combustion engines. There are more hydrogen fuel cell cars being built currently than any other innovation. Let's also not forget about hydrogen-on-demand vehicles that are either using a hydrogen compound or electrolyzing water to create hydrogen, avoiding the compressed or liquid hydrogen refueling scenario altogether. And, what about adapting hydrogen peroxide for fuel in car since it is currently being used in racecars and jet packs as a propellant?
With Germany, Japan, Norway and the U. S. in the hunt, the hydrogen economy is just around the bend. You have to wonder about Russia, however. They are basing their entire futures on a heavy pollution oil production culture, oil pipelines, and gas guzzling cars. However, America is on the right side of history.
